The law in Florida requires residents to have auto insurance, and they must have both personal injury protection and property damage liability coverage. The minimum requirement is $10,000 of no-fault, or PIP, protection and $10,000 for property damage.
The PIP will cover income loss and medical expenses that result from an auto accident. It will also cover any children and members in the household, your child riding on a school bus, you as a bicyclist or pedestrian involved in an auto accident, and people in the car that don’t have PIP coverage and have their own car. If someone in your vehicle has their own PIP insurance, their insurance will cover them.
Property damage liability will cover the damages you are responsible for in an accident to someone else’s property, but not your own.
You are required to have a minimum liability, but there is also optional coverage to discuss with your agent at Lewis Insurance Group, LLC. Comprehensive insurance pays for damages to your own car that isn’t a result of a collision with another vehicle. It can be damage caused by a storm or vandalism. Collision insurance pays for any damages that are related to an accident to your vehicle. Uninsured and underinsured motorist insurance pays for damages that occur in the event of an accident with someone who doesn’t have enough coverage, or who doesn't have insurance at all.
Florida requires no-fault car insurance, in order to protect drivers in the state from being sued because of an accident. However, the driver could still be sued if the accident is highly damaging to the vehicles. This will work with your liability to make sure that the accident is covered in some way.
